Western Mallorca is dominated by the Serra del Norte (Tramontana) mountain range. There are hundreds of pretty towns and villages hidden amongst the rocky outcrops which reach all the way to the sea, creating spectacular cliffs and rocky coves with small sandy beaches. The crystal blue waters here have spent millions of years eating away at the rock to create an amazingly rugged coastline. Equally fascinating are the famous faces and prestigious owners who have found themselves an idyllic getaway amongst the orange groves and cobbled streets of this area.

The main towns in West Mallorca / Majorca are:

• Puigpunyent: is an old Moorish town nestled in a mountainous valley that has been transformed into an official Nature Reserve and a rambler’s paradise. The terraces leading up the valley are exceedingly fertile and olive groves spill down the mountainside, which locals harvest to produce olive oil for the Island. The area has also become synonymous with up-and-coming artists.
• Banyalbufar: is a small town which cascades down the mountainside towards the sea. The land here is also cultivated in spectacular terraces, and all types of fruit are grown by the locals. The remains of a Moorish watch tower, built to protect the people against marauding pirates, stand on a rocky outcrop and allow visitors wonderful views of the town, sea and coastline.
• Valldemossa: reputedly the prettiest village on the whole Island, Valledemossa is probably best known for the people who have lived here - Chopin and George Sands stayed at the Monastery (inspiring the novel ‘Winter In Mallorca’) and the Mallorcan Saint Catalina Tomas was born here in 1531. Aside from the names, however, Valldemossa is a quaint town with narrow cobbled streets and beautiful mountains views. The monastery is more or less a living museum, with a replica monastic pharmacy and Chopin’s piano on show.
• Deiá: is a town very similar to Valldemossa in the fact that it is has many famous names associated with it. Pablo Picasso lived here, as did poet Robert Graves, and the villas here are quickly sold to Hollywood celebrities like Catherine Zeta-Jones and Claudia Schiffer. It is a charming village at the foot of Mount Teix and is surrounded by orange, lemon and olive groves.
• Sóller/Port de Sóller: is located in Val dels Taronjes (Valley of Oranges) which is the town’s main produce. You can find sensational views of the town and its plantations by driving up hairpin mountain roads to the Coll de Sóller, at a height of nearly 500 metres above sea level, from where you can also see the Port which is connected to the old town by tram. Sóller also has a narrow gauge railway which runs to Palma.
• Lluc: is the most important place of pilgrimage on the whole of the Island. Originally built in 1250AD the monastery is now home to a boys School of Religion and Choir, in fact the Choir ‘Els Blavets’ (named after the colour of their robes – blau in Mallorquin for blue) is so highly rated people travel from the world over to hear them perform.
