The North East of Mallorca possibly includes the most astonishing variety of lifestyles that anyone could wish to imagine; from large touristic hubs to serene mountain villages. The coastline is vibrant with tourists during the summer season and the resorts are made up of all the things that are part of a successful holiday destination; miles of excellent beaches and inexpensive food and drink, topped off with wonderful weather. On the other hand, a short journey through winding mountain roads and the contrast couldn’t be starker. The villages here are peaceful, with narrow streets and olive trees, flea markets, quaint churches and a fiercely proud and superstitious people.

Perhaps one of the most attractive areas, with its wonderful beaches, select real estate and stunning environment is the Costa de los Pinos.

The main towns in the North East of Mallorca:

• Artá: is steeped in folklore and is one of the oldest settlements on the Island, nestled in the mountains overlooking the Bay of Alcúdia. The views are truly breathtaking. As you walk the shady streets you feel a million miles from home, as though you’ve stepped back in time, listening to the hubbub of the market place crammed with street vendors. Artá is also home to a lovely set of underground cave systems and the remains of a prehistoric settlement – both of which are accessible to the public.
• Capdepera (Cala Rajada, Canyamel and Font de Sa Cala): situated on the Island’s most Easterly coast, all three were once idyllic fishing villages, and thankfully still retain much of that timeless authentic charm. Although they are now centres for the tourism industry you can still find pine-lined beaches which are relatively quiet, save for Sundays when it seems as if all the world and his dog has turned out for a BBQ picnic on the front! There is also an excellent golf course near Canyamel.
• Son Servera: incorporates the majority of the East coast’s tourist havens, including Cala Bona, Cala Millor, Costa De los Pinos and Sa Coma. All of these resorts sit alongside each other along a 6km stretch of coastline and were all once separate fishing villages which have grown into a lively agglomeration in recent years. In fact, you can walk from each town to the next very easily as a wide promenade, packed with shops, bars, restaurants and clubs, connects all four. The beaches are also fantastic here and benefit from being protected by sea walls, making them some of the safest on the island for swimmers. Sports tourists are drawn to the several golf courses in the area.
• Son Serra de Marina and Colonia de Sant Pere: Son Serra de Marina and Colonia de Sant Pere are two small marina resorts on the south side of the Bay of Alcudia. They are relatively "low profile" and thus offer a cheaper and quieter location for those looking for apartments and villas in a getaway-from-it-all location with wonderful coastal scenery.
