Property for sale in South East Mallorca (Majorca)

The South East of Mallorca / Majorca is most famous for the mixture of busy, and some quietier, bays (calas) which line the coast. It is very popular amongst tourists as a more tranquil alternative to the buzzing resorts of Magaluf and Palmanova in the South West although it has more than its fair share of night life, restaurants, and high class marinas. Aside from that there are many beautiful towns and pleasant beaches in the area, as well as key manufacturing sites such as the Pearl Factory in Manacor.

The main towns in the South East of Mallorca / Majorca are:

  • Manacor: The is probably most famous for the large pearl factory and show rooms which cultivates the majority of all Mallorca’s pearls.  It is also renowned for its furnture manufacture and is the second city on the Island (after Palma) and has a small city-like feel to it.  It is a modern town with the benefit of a nice beach and bustling harbour at Porto Cristo.
  • Porto Cristo: the old, natural harbour of Manacor.  Tourism is becoming increasingly important here, aided by the narrow inlet which creates a beautiful white sandy beach and a sheltered area for swimming.  There are many fine restaurants along the front serving locally caught seafood.  Another big attraction to the area are the Coves dels Hams and the Coves del Drac, underground cave systems with daily conducted tours which make the town extremely busy with day visitors during the summer months.
  • Felanitx: is a lively town which has interestingly been built across four hills.  Its importance comes from the fact that it specialises in pottery and glass and the economy here still depends upon these trades.  It is also an agricultural area and enjoys an established Agrotourism market.  Close by is the Hermitage of San Salvador, an old place of pilgrimage which is home to a small community of nuns and a small but highly unusual bicycle museum.
  • Porto Colom: is the old harbour of Felanitx.  Today it is a thriving marina, filled with tourists and top class yachts and catamarans, which has natural shelter with its narrow access to the sea.  The beach is of fine sand and is lined with pine woodland.
  • Cala D’Or: or Golden Cove, is a very typical holiday resort (once the largest on the Island) which consists of five different coves, several upmarket marinas and plenty of hotel blocks.  Development here exploded in the 1970’s and continues today, reaching along the coast.
  • Cala Romatica/Cala Murada/Cala Figuera: although separated by some distance, these three coves are small resorts on rocky cliffs which seem to balance on the coast.  They all have very pretty natural bays which remain unspoilt and visitors can find beautiful views of the Mediterranean.
  • Santanyi: this old, walled country town lies in the plains of southern central Mallorca and stretches down towards the sea.  It is mainly agricultural and relies heavily on market gardens which produce many varieties of fruit.
