Information on South West Mallorca (Majorca)

Banyalbufar, Mallorca, SpainOutside of Palma, the South West of Mallorca is definitely the most developed area.  It has a continually lively, ‘fiesta’ atmosphere and is dominated by tourists who chose to come here because of its proximity to Palma and the airport; its spectacular coastline, coves and some wonderful wide, sandy beaches with clean and safe waters.  The resorts here almost merge into one modern urbanisation, expanding southwards, away from the Capital.  Despite this being the most intensively developed part of the Island, an air of sophistication in areas such as Santa Ponsa and Andratx, with their marinas, golf courses and plush villas, sits comfortably along side the traditional package holiday resorts of Palma Nova and Magaluf.

Cala Fornells, Mallorca, Spain

The main resorts in South West Mallorca are:

  • Palma Nova: this resort, called ‘New Palma’, boomed in the 70’s and 80’s along with Magaluf in the adjacent bay.  It has the trademark sandy beach and crystal blue waters, as well as a classy marina, a large mix of hotels and plenty of show houses.
  • Magaluf: Was for a long time the heart of the mass market tourist industry in Mallorca.  Unfortunately little consideration was given to planning in the 1960s and the area was crammed to the hilt with high rise hotels, seedy cafes and cheap fast food restaurants.  On the other hand, recent years have seen vast improvement in the area, with demolition of some of the worst examples of 60’s architecture, and with a concerted campaign by the Mallorca Government to change opinions of the town.  Still remains a favourite destination for the Brits!
  • Santa Ponsa: again, once a small fishing village and now a tourist destination.  The beach here is perfectly sheltered by a natural harbour, which has now been altered to include a marina. There are three excellent golf courses just to the north with their exclusive apartment and villa complexes.
  • Paguera: travelling further to the West, Paguera is slightly more removed from the main throng of tourists.  The beach is usually quieter here, and wooded hills lead away from the shore.
  • Andratx/ Port d’Andratx: is definitely a change from the other resorts.  It is less well known amongst the mass market tourist throngs and in many respects its lack of any sizable beach protected it from the boom that took over other resorts in this area. Much quieter and with the main town situated in a picturesque valley, it is surrounded with pine woods and a steep rocky coastline which gives the Port and town so much of its character. There is a working ‘country house’ here, which offers visitors a museum and watch towers which date back to the times of marauding pirates!  The bays here can be quiet beautiful and relatively undisturbed, especially if you steer clear of the actual Port area.  The Port now houses a large and modern marina and is famed for its excellent water sport facilities, including, Jet Ski, scuba diving, boat chartering and paragliding.  The small islet of La Dragonera can also be reached by boat from here.
