The flat, fertile plains of Central Mallorca make a marked contrast from the more mountainous regions of the North and West.  They overspill with olives groves and orchards and in the spring the whole area is awash with the colour and scent of almond blossom. 

The area depends upon agriculture and Agrotourism (rural hotels) and small towns tend to be based around farmsteads.  Mallorca’s best wines are produced here.

The main towns in Central Mallorca / Majorca are:

• Bunyola: is a small charming town situated in the foothills of the Serra Del Norte, surrounded by Pine Woodland.  It is based around the Moorish farmstead of Raxa.  The country house is open to the public, as a museum, and houses many fine antiquities.  Recently, a golf course has reinvigorated the area.
• Algaida: is home to some of the last remaining windmills on the Island, which are prettily dotted across the landscape.  The town itself is at the foot of Puig del Randa, one of the most pleasant excursions on the Island. There are three well frequented monasteries on the ascent and exceptional views at the summit.
• Alaró: nestles in the foothills of the Tramontana (Serra Del Norte) mountains which set a magnificent backdrop. The most noticeable feature here is geographical.  An imposing plateau rises up from the ground and stands at nearly 1000 metres above sea level, at the summit of which is the Castle of Alaró, a Church and a hostel.  The sights are only reachable by foot. The village preserves all its rustic charm but is increasingly characterised by its cosmopolitan and multinational population that have been attracted by the beauty of the town’s rural setting and its proximity to vibrant life of Palma.
• Binissalem/Consell: are two small, neighbouring towns which are noted mainly for the excellent wines that they produce.  The landscape is dotted with smallholdings and windmills, with the beginnings of Agrotourism.  This has been aided by the Foro – a mock mediaeval castle which is a hotel, wax museum and theatre.
• Costitx: is a small unremarkable town, save for the fact that it is home to the Astronomical Observatory of Mallorca, visitors welcome.  The town also has a tradition of bull-rearing.
• Sineu: is the geographical heart of the Island, King Jaime II built a palace here to recognise this importance.  It is mainly an agricultural town, producing cereals, vegetables and nuts, but it also has some interesting monuments such as the winged lion of St Mark and an 18th Century sundial.
• Inca: is a large industrial and commercial town.  Its main industry is the manufacturing of leather goods, using traditional production methods, which are then sold across the Island. Houses a large and attractive market on Thursdays
• Campanet: Campanet is a small town situated in the lower hills of the Serra de Tramuntana.  The main attraction here is the excellent Agrotourism facilities and the impressive set of underground caves.  The town is also one of the main basket weaving townships on the Island.
• Buger: situated just to the south of Campanet, Buger shares a similar feel, nestled on a small hill over looking the central plains of Mallorca to the south, west and east, and the steeply rising mountains to the north.
• Petra: The town of Petra is most famous for Juniper Serra, a man born in the town, who later became a celebrated missionary in California.  Petra is an agricultural town, producing cereals, fruits, wines and meats - there is a wine cellar in Petra with wines dating from the 1870s.
